Belonging: Why We Were Never Meant to Do Life Alone
By Beck – Kula Springs Yoga
There was a moment recently that stopped me in my tracks.
When the children and I first arrived in Bali, we didn’t know anyone. We had left behind everything that felt familiar, and if I'm honest, I thought I needed to prove that I could do it all on my own.
Then something unexpected happened.
A woman we'd only just met opened her home to us while we found our feet. What began as an act of kindness slowly became something much bigger. Over the following weeks, strangers became friends, dinners became traditions and those friends became our little family here in Bali.
Looking back, I realised it wasn't just Bali that was changing me.
It was the experience of allowing people in.
For so much of my life, I've been the one who holds everything together.
The organiser.
The nurturer.
The person who says, "I'm fine," even when I'm anything but.
Perhaps you recognise yourself in that too.
Many of us wear independence like a badge of honour. We convince ourselves that asking for help is a sign of weakness or that needing other people somehow means we've failed.
But what if we've got it completely the wrong way round?
What if strength isn't about carrying everything alone?
What if strength is having the courage to say...
"I could do with a little support today."
One of the greatest lessons yoga has ever taught me isn't how to balance on one leg or touch my toes.
It's that we're not separate from one another.
Every breath reminds us that we're connected.
Every class reminds us that we're part of something bigger than ourselves.
And every time we step onto the mat together, we're quietly reminded that healing doesn't always happen in isolation.
Sometimes it happens simply because someone asks,
"How are you?"
...and genuinely waits for the answer.
Over the past few months, I've watched this happen inside our Kula Springs community.
Women who have never met in person encouraging one another.
Sharing stories.
Laughing together.
Sometimes crying together.
Supporting one another through life's hardest moments.
It reminds me that belonging isn't about having hundreds of friends.
It's about finding the people with whom you can simply exhale.
The people who allow you to stop pretending.
Because belonging isn't something we earn.
It isn't something we have to prove we're worthy of.
Belonging begins the moment we realise we don't have to be anyone other than ourselves.
That's why our theme for August is Belonging – Together We Rise.
Throughout this month, we'll explore what it means to reconnect with ourselves, open our hearts to others and gently learn that receiving support is every bit as important as offering it.
If you've been feeling overwhelmed...
If you've been carrying more than your fair share...
Or if you've simply forgotten what it feels like to be looked after for a change...
Perhaps this month is your invitation to pause.
To breathe.
To soften.
And to remember that you were never meant to do life alone.
Because sometimes healing doesn't begin with doing more.
Sometimes it begins the moment we realise...
We already belong.
A Gentle Invitation
If this resonates with you, I'd love to invite you to join us for this month's Sunday Sanctuary – Learning to Lean.
Together we'll explore why asking for help can feel so difficult, how our nervous system responds when we carry too much for too long and how gentle yoga, breathwork and connection can help us soften our grip.
Whether you're joining us for the first time or have been part of Kula Springs for years, you'll be warmly welcomed.
Because wherever you are on your journey...
There is always a place for you here.
