Understanding the Vayus: The Ancient Yogic Map of Energy

When most people think of yoga, they think of poses.

But beneath the physical practice lies a vast body of wisdom designed to help us understand ourselves more deeply.

One of these teachings is the concept of the Vayus.

The word Vayu can be translated as "wind" or "movement of energy." Rather than viewing energy as one thing flowing through the body, yogic philosophy describes five primary movements of energy, each with its own direction and purpose.

When these energies are balanced, we tend to feel more grounded, clear, connected and at ease.

When they become imbalanced, we may experience physical, emotional or mental discomfort.

Whilst this may sound abstract, many of us recognise these experiences in everyday life.

Prana Vayu – Receiving Life

Prana Vayu is the inward-moving energy centred around the heart and lungs.

It governs our ability to receive.

Not just breath, but experiences, support, nourishment and connection.

When Prana Vayu is balanced, we feel open to life.

When it is depleted, we may feel disconnected, withdrawn or resistant to receiving help from others.

Many of us are very good at giving, but struggle with receiving. Understanding Prana Vayu invites us to ask:

Where in my life am I resisting support?

Apana Vayu – Letting Go

Apana Vayu moves downward and outward.

It is the energy of elimination, release and grounding.

Physically it supports the body's ability to remove waste. Emotionally it supports our ability to let go of what no longer serves us.

When Apana Vayu is balanced, we feel rooted, stable and secure.

When it is imbalanced, we may struggle to release old emotions, relationships, expectations or fears.

It asks us:

What am I still carrying that I no longer need?

Samana Vayu – Finding Balance

Located around the navel centre, Samana Vayu is the energy of digestion and integration.

Not only digesting food, but digesting life.

Every experience we have needs to be processed, understood and integrated.

When Samana Vayu is healthy, we are able to make sense of our experiences and find clarity.

When it is weak, we may feel overwhelmed, confused or unable to process what is happening around us.

It invites us to reflect:

What in my life am I still trying to make sense of?

Udana Vayu – Expression and Growth

Udana Vayu moves upward through the throat and head.

It supports communication, self-expression and personal growth.

This is the energy that allows us to speak our truth and express who we are.

When balanced, we feel confident sharing our voice.

When blocked, we may feel unheard, stuck or unable to express ourselves authentically.

Its question is:

What wants to be expressed through me?

Vyana Vayu – Connection

Vyana Vayu moves throughout the entire body.

It is the integrating force that connects all the other Vayus together.

When balanced, we feel connected to ourselves, our bodies and the world around us.

When imbalanced, we may feel fragmented or disconnected.

Vyana reminds us that wellbeing is not created by focusing on one area of life alone. Everything is connected.

Bringing the Vayus Into Everyday Life

The Vayus are not simply an ancient philosophical idea.

They offer a practical framework for understanding ourselves.

They remind us that life requires both receiving and letting go.

Both processing and expressing.

Both grounding and expansion.

By becoming aware of these different movements of energy, we begin to notice where life is flowing and where it feels stuck.

And perhaps most importantly, we begin to understand that balance is not something we achieve once and keep forever.

It is something we continually return to.

This is the true practice of yoga.

Not simply moving the body, but learning to live in harmony with ourselves.

This article accompanies my workshop with my teacher Raj, whose teachings have had a profound influence on my own understanding of yoga as a living practice. Together we explored how the Vayus can help us navigate modern life with greater awareness, balance and ease.
